Energy Technology Perspectives 2026

Clean technology has become a manufacturing contest. The IEA’s flagship technology report measures deployment, factories, trade and policy as one industrial system rather than separate climate indicators.

Energy Technology Perspectives 2026

26 March 2026
$1.2T Estimated clean-technology market in 2025
20% Average annual market growth since 2015
600+ Technology designs in the IEA guide

Energy Technology Perspectives 2026 treats clean technology as a large industrial market with factories, trade routes, cost curves and strategic dependencies. That is a more useful frame than counting installed gigawatts alone. Deployment can rise while manufacturing capability becomes more concentrated, and domestic subsidies can increase capacity without creating competitive firms.

Our reading

The report’s value is the linkage between demand and supply. It asks not only how much equipment will be installed, but where components are made, how costs differ, which policies shift investment and where concentration creates systemic exposure.

What the official report establishes

The IEA places the clean-technology market at roughly USD 1.2 trillion in 2025 after average growth of about 20 percent a year since 2015. It tracks manufacturing and trade across solar photovoltaics, batteries, electric vehicles, wind, electrolysers and heat pumps, with special attention to materials and industrial cost structures.

The evidence shows large regional imbalances. China retains dominant capacity in several supply chains, including very high shares of solar-module and lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Other regions are responding with tax credits, grants, local-content rules and public finance. The report tests how these interventions affect cost, resilience and competitiveness rather than assuming that capacity announcements equal durable production.

The strategic meaning

Industrial policy should be judged by operational outcomes: utilization, yield, supplier density, export capability, innovation and the ability to survive a down-cycle. A factory that depends indefinitely on protected demand and imported critical inputs may create employment but not strategic autonomy.

The strongest opportunities may sit in specific components, equipment, software, materials recovery and services rather than full replication of every integrated chain. Countries should identify where they possess engineering depth, cheap clean power, logistics, mineral access or a credible customer base, then build around those advantages.

Where the official analysis is thin

Scenario models necessarily simplify firm behaviour, financing constraints and political durability. The report can compare manufacturing costs, but it cannot fully predict how firms respond to subsidy withdrawal, trade disputes or rapid technology shifts. Project pipelines should therefore be discounted for execution risk and future utilization.

Implications for governments, producers and investors

  • Measure policy success through operating data and export performance, not announced capacity.
  • Prioritize segments where local engineering, materials or energy advantages are defensible.
  • Coordinate grid, skills, permitting and supplier development with factory incentives.
  • Design resilience policy to preserve competition and innovation rather than freeze incumbent technologies.

What to watch next

  • Factory utilization rates as global capacity expands faster than demand in some segments.
  • Trade remedies and local-content rules that alter equipment flows.
  • Whether recycling and material efficiency reduce exposure to upstream concentration.
