Container rankings do not measure bulk-industrial capability

The Container Port Performance Index measures the time container ships spend in port. It is a useful operational benchmark, but it does not describe iron-ore berths, LNG jetties, clinker terminals, stockyard capacity, rail discharge or the ability to serve a large industrial hinterland. World Bank

Performance must be interpreted in the context of route disruption

The 2025 CPPI found a slight global deterioration from 2024, with longer vessel turnaround on average. The World Bank cautions that scores are influenced by route changes, weather and geopolitical conditions outside port control. World Bank

Industrial value comes from the hinterland connection

A deep-water berth has limited value if rail, river or road capacity cannot move material to mines, mills and plants. The map connects ports to verified industrial corridors and shows whether the route is captive, shared or constrained. UN Trade and Development

Longer voyages have changed exposure

UNCTAD reported that average voyage distance increased from 4,831 miles in 2018 to 5,245 miles in 2024 as security concerns and route changes reshaped shipping. Longer routes consume more vessel time and can transfer congestion to ports that were not designed for sustained diversion volumes. UN Trade and Development

Replacement analysis should be commodity-specific

A container service can often shift among several terminals more easily than a bulk chain tied to dedicated unloaders, stockyards, rail gauges or pipelines. The atlas assesses alternatives separately for iron ore, coal, bauxite, clinker, chemicals, crude oil and LNG. UN Trade and Development

Dedicated terminals create both efficiency and rigidity

A port designed around one commodity can handle very large volumes efficiently, but dedicated unloaders, storage, pipelines, rail interfaces and vessel classes can make substitution difficult. The dossier therefore identifies terminal specialization rather than describing the port as one uniform node. World Bank

Alternative-port analysis checks physical compatibility and inland connection before spare capacity. A nearby port is not a substitute when it lacks the berth, equipment, storage or corridor required by the commodity. World Bank

Operational resilience is read across several clocks

Vessel time can change in days, annual throughput is reported later, and infrastructure expansion takes years. The atlas keeps these time scales separate. A sudden deterioration triggers a diagnostic note rather than an automatic judgement. Weather, route diversion, labour action, security events and unusual call mix are checked before the change is attributed to terminal performance. World Bank

Every port claim carries a capability record

The publication record includes terminal, commodity, maximum vessel class where known, berth and channel constraints, storage, handling equipment, rail or pipeline links, principal industrial users, recent performance period and supporting source. Coordinates retain a precision field because port complexes can span large areas. World Bank

This evidence model lets the map support industrial analysis without pretending that container efficiency, bulk throughput and energy-terminal capacity are one measure. World Bank
