Texture is statistical orientation

Crystallographic texture is the non-random distribution of grain orientations. It develops during solidification, deformation, recrystallisation and phase transformation.

Property consequences

Elastic modulus, yield strength, formability, magnetic response and fracture can all vary with direction when texture is strong.

How it is measured

X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and EBSD provide pole figures or orientation-distribution functions. Each method samples a different volume and resolution.

Controlling texture

Rolling schedules, annealing conditions and solidification gradients can be adjusted to favour useful orientations or suppress harmful anisotropy.

Engineering takeaway

A single scalar property is insufficient when processing creates preferred orientation; specify and test the relevant directions.
