Inspection is a probability problem

Non-destructive testing does not guarantee that a component is defect-free. Each method has a probability of detection that depends on defect size, orientation, location, material and procedure.

Surface methods

Visual inspection, liquid penetrant and magnetic-particle testing are effective for surface-breaking or near-surface defects. Their usefulness depends on access, surface condition and material response.

Volumetric methods

Ultrasonic testing uses reflected sound, while radiography records differential attenuation. Ultrasonics are sensitive to orientation and coupling; radiography provides intuitive images but involves safety and access constraints.

Procedure and reference standards

Calibration blocks, acceptance criteria, operator qualification and documented procedures are essential. Instrument capability alone does not define inspection reliability.

Working rule

Select the method around the expected defect population and component geometry, then validate detection capability using representative references.
