Layerwise manufacturing changes the problem
Additive manufacturing builds geometry and material history simultaneously. Each layer experiences local heating, melting or bonding, cooling and reheating from later passes.
Process families
Powder-bed fusion, directed-energy deposition, binder jetting, material extrusion and vat-based methods differ in feedstock, energy source and consolidation mechanism. Each process creates a distinct defect and resolution profile.
Microstructure follows the thermal field
High cooling rates, steep gradients and repeated thermal cycles can create fine cells, texture, residual stress and metastable phases. Build orientation therefore affects properties.
Qualification is a system task
Reliable production requires feedstock control, machine calibration, parameter management, in-process monitoring, post-processing, inspection and traceability. A successful prototype is not yet a qualified process.
