Cell manufacturing is downstream of several distinct bottlenecks
A cell plant depends on battery-grade lithium chemicals, cathode active material, anode material, separator, electrolyte and specialised equipment. The map therefore treats cell assembly as one stage rather than the whole chain. International Energy Agency International Energy Agency

Chemistry changes the chain
The rise of lithium iron phosphate reduces nickel and cobalt exposure but increases the strategic importance of phosphate chemistry, graphite and manufacturing know-how. Chemistry filters are not treated as cosmetic labels. International Energy Agency

Operating status matters more than announced nameplate capacity

Regional depth comes from suppliers and engineering
Established battery regions contain equipment suppliers, chemical processors, testing capability and trained labour. Replicating the cell building alone does not reproduce that system. International Energy Agency
